How to Prevent or Handle Frozen Water Pipes

2/13/2023 (Permalink)

Winter might be harsh outdoors, but when frozen water pipes burst, the real emergency conditions are, ever so suddenly, indoors. Whether you’re thinking ahead to protect yourself from this bad scenario—or you’re thinking on your toes in an actual pipe-burst situation—you can use the following helpful tips to ensure that you act smart.

Prevention Tips:

  1. Insulate your water pipes.

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not expanding ice from within a pipe that makes it burst; it’s the remaining liquid water finding nowhere else to go but out. Wherever your pipes are warm to the touch, insulation is likely needed. Insulating your pipes not only serves as a preventative measure for pipe bursts but also reduces the cost you pay for hot water. Ask a local hardware store for pipe insulation that you can install quickly and painlessly.

  1. Seal those seams.

To keep cold wind away from your pipes, seal cracks and holes in your walls with caulking. Simply walk along the walls of your house and feel for drafts. And for fainter drafts, light an incense stick. When the smoke is offset, there’s a draft.

  1. Some doors are best left open.

Did you know? Kitchen and bathroom cabinets can keep warm inside air from reaching pipes under sinks or in adjacent outside walls. It’s a good idea to keep cabinet doors open during cold spells to let warm air circulate around the pipes to prevent freezing.

  1. Don’t hesitate to use your taps.

As long as water is running and pressure doesn’t build up, there’s a far lower risk of freeze and pipes bursting. Also, it’s okay to let faucets lightly drip where you believe there could be risk of cold pipes. The slight relief in pressure prevents potential buildup within your pipes.

  1. Leaving for a trip? Don’t over-lower the heat.

While understandably it saves money to lower your thermostat when you’re away from home, it’s important to not be overzealous and allow your home to cool excessively in your absence. A home kept reasonably warm will ensure pipes share the same cozy condition.

If your property experiences a water loss call the professionals at SERVPRO® of Denver West, our dedicated team will make it like it never even happened.

Do you know what the number one cause of house fires is?

9/13/2022 (Permalink)

If you guessed cooking incidents then you'd be correct. These incidents are usually brought on by leaving a pot or pan unattended while you run and do something for "just a minute." According to the NFPA, 40% of all fires, or on average 156,600 per year are started this way. There is a (57%) of a fire starting on a range compared to in the oven (16%) due to frying.

Wandering if there's anything you can do to prevent becoming one of these 156,00 house fires a year? Well keep reading, SERVPRO® of Denver West has your back.

  • Make sure you are always alert and never leave your food unattended while it is cooking.
  • Make sure your smoke detectors are working and you have a fire extinguisher close by.
  • NEVER throw water on a grease fire, it will only spread it faster. Instead, put a lid on the pan to smother the fire.
  • If the fire starts in your oven, simply turn it off and keep the oven door closed until the fire is out.
  • Always keep anything burnable like clothing or towels away from fires.

If your property experiences fire, soot, or smoke damage call SERVPRO® of Denver West. We have IICRC Trained staff ready to help restore your home to preloss condition. We are Here to Help® 24/7/365, call us at 303-576-6868.

Smoke and Soot Cleanup

8/2/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot are invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allow us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and Soot Facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Denver West will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Outdoor Propane Heater Safety Guidelines for Aurora Businesses?

5/9/2022 (Permalink)

An outdoor propane heat lamp is shown. We restore fire damage 24-hours a day in the Denver area.

Businesses use propane patio heaters so people can spend more time outdoors on chilly days in Aurora. Our team in Denver West offers this information from the National Fire Protection Association for outdoor propane heaters safety:

Propane Patio Heaters

Propane heaters need to be used in accordance with their listing and manufacturer instructions. Prior to using a propane heater, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for information such as the following:

  • Necessary clearances from the heating element
  • Proper ventilation required
  • Proper inspection, cleaning, and maintenance procedures
  • Lighting and shutdown procedures
  • Where the heater can and cannot be used (for example, heaters cannot be used in enclosed locations)
  • Procedures for properly storing heaters

The restrictions for using propane heaters are also based on the occupancy in which they are used. For example, in assembly occupancies, such as restaurants with fifty or more occupants, heaters cannot be located within five ft (1.5 m) of the exits. Regardless of where they are used, if a heater uses propane hoses, they must be as short as possible, visible, and protected from damage.

For patio heaters that use integral LP-Gas containers with a capacity greater than 1.08 lb (0.49 kg), NFPA 1 requires that the heaters be listed by an organization acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).

Our local team in Denver West responds to fire damage emergencies every year and offer these carbon monoxide safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • CO alarms should be installed in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home and in other locations where required by applicable laws, codes, or standards. For the best protection, interconnect all CO alarms throughout the house.
  • Call your local fire department’s non-emergency number to find out what number to call if the CO alarm sounds
  • If the CO alarm sounds, immediately move to a fresh air location outdoors or by an open window or door. Make sure everyone inside the home is accounted for. Call for help from a fresh air location and stay there until emergency personnel declare that it is safe to re-enter the home.

Fireplace and Wood Stove Safety for Greenwood Village?

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

The door of a wood burning stove is open and wood is burning. We restore fire damage 24-hours a day in Denver.

Do you know that chimneys can catch on fire? SERVPRO® of Denver West offers these tips for Greenwood Village from Federal Emergency Management Agency for preventing creosote buildup that can cause chimney fires:

Limited air supply and unseasoned wood encourage the buildup of creosote. To avoid that buildup, do not restrict the air supply by:

  • Closing the glass doors
  • Not opening the damper wide enough
  • The longer the smoke is in the flue, the more likely it is that creosote will form
  • By closing down the stove damper or air inlets on a wood stove too soon or too much
  • Do not burn unseasoned wood
  • In the case of wood stoves, overloading the firebox with wood in an attempt to get a longer burn time also contributes to creosote buildup

Fireplace and Woodstove Safety

  • Keep a glass or metal screen in front of the fireplace to prevent embers or sparks from jumping out
  • Do not burn paper in your fireplace or woodstove
  • Put ashes in a metal container with a lid, outside, at least three feet from your home
  • Put the fire out before you go to sleep or leave your home

Halloween Fire Safety Tips for Parker Families?

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

Flammable Halloween party decorations are shown. We restore fire damage in Denver 24-hours a day!

Wishing Parker families a Happy Halloween!

Each year decorations are the first thing to ignite in about 800 reported home fires each year. SERVPRO® of Denver West offers these tips for Halloween safety from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • When choosing a costume, stay away from long trailing fabric
  • Provide children with flashlights to carry for lighting or glow sticks as part of their costume
  • Dried flowers, cornstalks, and crepe paper catch fire easily. Keep all decorations away from open flames and other heat sources like light bulbs and heaters.
  • Use a battery-operated candle or glow-stick in jack-o-lanterns. If you use a real candle, use extreme caution. Make sure children are watched at all times when candles are lit. When lighting candles inside jack-o-lanterns, use long, fireplace-style matches or a utility lighter. Be sure to place lit pumpkins well away from anything that can burn and far enough out of the way of trick-or-treaters, doorsteps, walkways, and yards.
  • Remember to keep exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes
  • Make sure all smoke alarms in the home are working
  • Tell children to stay away from open flames, including jack-o-lanterns with candles in them. Be sure they know how to stop, drop and roll if their clothing catches fire
